Hattiesburg Parks and Recreation department offers senior activities and events at the Sigler Senior Center. One of these events is Foster Grandparents.
Foster Grandparents is a volunteer based program for people 55 years of age and older. Eligible individuals work with children with exceptional needs at schools, Head Start Centers, daycare centers and faith-based organizations. Foster grandparents mentor children and give them the gentle guidance they need to live a successful life.
This program is a great option for older individuals who do not enjoy other traditional senior groups and for those who have a love for children. Foster Grandparents is an opportunity for older individuals to interact with their community in a meaningful way that will benefit younger generations.
Retired individuals often find more time for themselves than they bargained for, so volunteer opportunities give them something to look forward to during the week and also gives them a social outlet. Studies have shown that volunteering promotes a longer life and a positive outlook.
